Why is acetylsalicylic acid used?
Acetylsalicylic acid is taken to reduce the risk of blood clots and thus prevent more:
Heart attack
Stroke
Cardiovascular problems in patients with stable or unstable angina (a type of chest pain).
Acetylsalicylic acid is also used to prevent blood clots after certain types of heart surgery to widen or open blood vessels.
Acetylsalicylic acid is also used to treat acute myocardial infarction.
Do not take acetylsalicylic acid:
If you are allergic to acetylsalicylic acid or any of the ingredients in acetylsalicylic acid
If you are allergic to other salicylates or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). NSAIDs are often used for arthritis, rheumatism, and pain.
If you have ever had an asthma attack or swelling in any part of your body
If you currently have an ulcer in your stomach or small intestine or any other type of bleeding, such as a stroke
If you have ever had a problem in which your blood doesn't clot properly
If you have severe liver or kidney problems
If you have severe heart problems that can cause shortness of breath and ankle swelling
If you are in the last 3 months of pregnancy
If you are taking a medication called methotrexate
Possible side effects:
Sudden wheezing, swelling of your lips, face, or body, rash, fainting, or difficulty swallowing.
Skin redness with blisters or peeling, which may be accompanied by a high fever and joint pain.
Unusual bleeding, such as coughing up blood, blood in your vomit or urine, or black stools.
Other medications and acetylsalicylic acid:
Treatment may be affected if acetylsalicylic acid is taken at the same time as certain other medications:
Blood thinning/clot prevention
High blood pressure
Heart rhythm regulation
Manic-depressive disorder
Pain and inflammation
Cancer or rheumatoid arthritis
Diabetes
How to take acetylsalicylic acid:
Adults
Heart attack prevention:
The recommended dose is 75-160 mg once daily.
Stroke prevention:
The recommended dose is 75-300 mg once daily.
Treatment of acute myocardial infarction:
The recommended initial dose is 150-500 mg.
How to store acetylsalicylic acid:
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not store above 30°C.
Keep the blister in the outer carton to protect from moisture.
Do not use acetylsalicylic acid after the expiry date printed on the carton or blister after EXP.
The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not dispose of medicines via wastewater or household waste.
