Magnesium ions prevent the formation of calcium oxalate crystals by combining with exogenous oxalate, thus preventing the formation of kidney crystals. Citrate ions alkaline the urine, making it more soluble and easily excreted. Citrate ions also prevent the formation of calcium oxalate. Therefore, magnesium citrate may be prescribed to prevent the recurrence of calcium oxalate kidney stones. It is prescribed for: • Oxaluria. • As a mild laxative to relieve constipation. Do not take magnesium citrate: • For abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and other symptoms of appendicitis. • After abdominal surgery. • For intestinal obstruction or perforation. • For rectal fissures. Warnings and Precautions Use with caution in: • Patients with renal impairment. • Patients with rectal bleeding. • Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Possible side effects of magnesium citrate These include: • Gastrointestinal irritation • Abdominal cramping • Nausea • Diarrhea • Laxative dependence with prolonged or excessive use • Fluid and electrolyte disturbances. Other Drugs and Magnesium Citrate In general, magnesium salts may impair the absorption of many other drugs. Administration should be separated by several hours. The following drug classes may interact with magnesium: • Aminoquinolones (such as chloroquine). • Fluoroquinolones (such as ciprofloxacin). • Nitrofurantoin. • Penicillamine and tetracyclines. How to Take Magnesium Citrate Dissolve the contents of one sachet in half a glass of water and give it 3 times daily, or as directed by your doctor. How to Store Magnesium Citrate • Keep this medication out of the sight and reach of children. • Do not use this medication after the expiration date. • Store this medication at room temperature, away from heat and direct light.
