Oral rehydration salts contain sugar and various types of salts that belong to a group of medications known as oral electrolytes.
They are used to replenish lost salts and fluids to relieve diarrhea in the short term and prevent dehydration (loss of body fluids) that can occur as a result of diarrhea, vomiting, travel, exercise, and excessive heat.
Signs of dehydration include: crying without tears, urinating less frequently, drowsiness, decreased physical activity, dry mouth, and a soft, sunken area on the top of the child's head.
