Amlodipine is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) or a special type of chest pain called angina, including a rare form called Prinzmetal's or variant angina.
In patients with high blood pressure, the medicine works by widening blood vessels, allowing blood to pass through them more easily.
In patients with angina, amlodipine works by improving blood flow to the heart muscle, which thus receives more oxygen to prevent chest pain.
This medicine does not provide immediate relief from chest pain caused by angina.
